Mushrooms
Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly
Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.
Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.
Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,
Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,
Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We
Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking
Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!
We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,
Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:
We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot’s in the door. —Sylvia Plath </pre> -

Blue Water … the open ocean where water turns deep blue and impenetrable with the human eye

Read a post on Facebook this morning, from a boarding school friend — an ABC student who grew up in what she terms “the old Harlem” - it was a lament on the loss of the familiar from her old neighborhood and the feeling she could no longer truly go home…The following response came, almost automatically, from my finger tips. She had obviously hit a chord… “Dear Gail,” I wrote, “savor the memories. We do not miss the familiar sound of the anchor hitting the bottom until we head out into blue water, asked by circumstance to navigate uncharted territory. Be well, my friend.”
